A victory for political prisoners in Iran

A victory for political prisoners in Iran

On the 3rd of January 2017, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, jailed writer and human rights activist in Iran, was temporarily released on bail of 500 million tooman (125000 dollars). Her husband Arash Sadeghi, jailed student and human rights activist, ended his hunger strike after 72 days.

Arash Sadeghi, 33 is a jailed student’s rights and a human rights activist in Iran. He is now in prison serving 19 years. He went on hunger strike on 24th October 2016 protesting against the unfair sentence and court process of his wife Golrokh Ebrahimi. He demanded the release of his wife Golrokh. His health was deteriorating due to the strike and he was in danger of losing his life. While the authorities in Iran was ignoring Arash’s hunger strike, people in Iran and around the world have gathered to support Arash.

Arash’s wife, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee who is a writer and a human rights activist, was sentence to six years prison sentence . On the 24th October 2016, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, 36, was arrested by security forces without any official summons. Golrokh’s charges were announced as ‘insulting Islamic sanctities’ and ‘spreading propaganda against the system’. The charges against Golrokh are unsubstantiated. While Golrokh was in hospital following surgery, she was sentenced to six years in prison in a court. She was not given the opportunity to defend herself. Following Golrokh’s arrest, Arash went on hunger strike. From the very beginning of the strike thousands of people started supporting Arash’s demand by signing petitions, participating in Tweet storms, sending letters to the authorities in Iran, sharing news about Arash on social media and organising solidarity acts. In Iran, many gathered in front of Evin Prison and also contacted MPs in Iran stating that the authorities are accountable for Arash’s life. Following weeks of protests, the authorities forced to release Golrokh and as a result Arash ended his hunger strike.
One more time, we have proved that our actions and protests can push back the brutality. We echoed the voice of Arash and Golrokh and we did not let the authorities in Iran silence them.
We would like to thank everyone for supporting Arash Sadeghi and Golrokh Ebrahimi and we would like to ask you to continue supporting the release of political prisoners in Iran.

Together we can make a difference.
