A couple have been sentenced to 19 years and 6 years
in prison for defending human rights in Iran
Golrokh and Arash are spending the best years of their life separate from each other in Evin prison in Iran
Their ‘crime’: defending human rights
On the morning of Monday 24th Oct 2016, the security forces in Iran broke the front door to Golrokh’s house and without showing any official summons for her arrest, they took her to Evin prison to serve a sentence of 6 years jail. Her husband Arash Sadeghi, student activist, is already in prison serving 19 years.
Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, 36, a human rights activist in Iran, was first arrested in September 2014 with her husband Arash. Both Arash and Golrokh were physically and psychologically tortured in prison when they were arrested in September 2014. Both were arrested with no official summons.
Golrokh was not able to attend her final court hearing as she was hospitalised after having major surgery. The court never considered her medical record and never gave her a chance to defend herself. Her charges were announced as ‘insulting Islamic sanctities’ and ‘spreading propaganda against the system’. Golrokh’s ‘crime’ was writing a story about the punishment of stoning in Iran which has never published. The security forces found this piece of writing when they raided her home in September 2014.
Prior to the raid on 24 October, Golrokh was threatened by the security forces many times warning her that she should not speak to media in regards to the situation of her husband Arash Sadeghi.
Following Golrokh’s arrest on 24th October, her husband Arash has started a protest in the only way he can – hunger strike. Arash’s life and health is in grave danger.
We ask you to support Golrokh and Arash who, under immense pressure in Iran, have never given up fighting for freedom. We ask you to gather support for Golrokh and Arash and demand their release from prison. We ask you to be their voice.
Please support Golrokh and Arash by giving only 5 minutes of your time to write a letter to the authorities in Iran. It takes only 5 minutes to copy and paste the following line and send it to the following addresses

نامه شيوا محبوبي به نازي پايكيدزه، قهرمان شطرنج زنان آمريكا
The 2017 Women’s World Chess Championship
To: Nazi Paikidze-Barnes, 2016 U.S. Women’s Chess Champion
Re: The 2017 Women’s World Chess Championship
Dear Nazi Paikidze
Your decision to boycott the Women’s World Chess Championship in Iran on February 2017 and speaking out against forcing women to wear hijab is tremendously admirable and inspiring.
My name is Shiva Mahbobi and I am writing to you as a woman who grew up in Iran and experienced being forced to wear hijab (Islamic dress code) from childhood. I spent more than three year in prisons in Iran as a political prisoner and was tortured at the age of 16 for demanding my rights. Read the rest of this entry

” Paikidze announced that she will boycott the Women’s World Chess Championship 2017 in Tehran, Iran due to its hijab dress code. She has stated, “I will NOT wear a hijab and support women’s oppression. Even if it means missing one of the most important competitions of my career.”
