Canadian Union of Postal Workers-death of jailed labour activist in Iran
Canadian Union of Postal Workers
asked for an investigation into the death of jailed labour activist in Iran
Following a letter from the Campaign to Free Political prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) to the human rights organisations and labour unions, the Canadian Union Of Postal Workers (CUPW) has sent a letter to the UN and ILO and asked for an urgent and thorough investigation into the death of jailed labour activist Shahrokh Zamani. Please see CUPW letter.
In the last month following the suspicious death of Shahrokh Zamani, several organizations and unions have issued statements demanding an investigation into Zamani’s death in prison. Free Them Now- Campaign to Free Jailed Workers in Iran, has also contacted labour unions and asked them to write to the regime in Iran. The unions that have issued statements include: Vancouver District and Labour Council, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Confédération générale du travail (CGT), Confédération nationale du travail (CNT)
The Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO), Federation of Labour Council and Unions in Iraq, and several more.
Shahrokh Zamani was a labour activist serving 11-years sentence in Rajai Shahr prison in the city of Karaj in Iran. Shahrokh was four years into his prison sentence. Shahrokh’s cellmate found his cold body, with blood in his mouth and nose, when he tried to wake him up in the morning of 13 September 2015. According to Shahrokh’s daughter, he had no prior illnesses. The authorities in Iran have refused a request for autopsy by Shahrokh’s family.
We ask you not to let Shahrokh Zamani’s death be forgotten. Shahrokh Zamani’s case represents many other cases of political prisoners who are under physical and psychological torture and they are deprived of urgent medical attention.
We call on all international communities, human rights organisations and labour unions to write a protest letter to the regime in Iran condemning the ill-treatment of political prisoners and demand an immediate and unconditional thorough investigation into the death of labour activist Sharokh Zamani.
